Westside Wine Trail West Kelowna
Westside Wine Trail is home to some of the oldest and most well-established vineyards and wineries in the Okanagan Valley. Located in the City of West Kelowna among picturesque rolling hills, scenic views, and relaxed rural roads, this wine trail boasts such iconic wineries as Mission Hill, Quails’ Gate, Mt Boucherie, Grizzli, and Indigenous as well as unique boutique wineries like Off The Grid, Ciao Bella, Kalala, The Hatch, Little Straw, Rollingdale, and Beaumont. This region is popular with beginners and experienced tasters alike. Enjoy restaurants such as Old Vines Restaurant at Quails’ Gate, experience The Terrace at Mission Hill, Blu Saffron at Volcanic Hills – and if a winery restaurant is not your taste, or budget, there is always 19 Okanagan Grill and Bar, part of Two Eagles Golf Course. Mission Hill Winery is situated on top of Mission Hill, overlooking Okanagan Lake, mountains and vineyards. The vast structure of the winery was completed in 2002, which includes a 12-story bell tower as it’s centerpiece. Down the hill, is iconic Quails’ Gate Winery, officially the 14th winery in BC in 1989, and is best known for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with vast vineyards that stretch down to Okanagan Lake. Their sommelier run tours, take you through the history of the winery, while walking through the vineyard, and experiencing majestic views of Okanagan Lake. This year, Quails’ Gate celebrates in 30th year anniversary! Mt. Boucherie began growing grapes in 1968, with the original winery being built in 2001. The name refers to the extinct volcano that is the geologic landmark of West Kelowna in the sun-soaked Okanagan Valley. The winery and vineyards were purchased from the original owners in 2016 with the vision of continuing this historic BC wine company with fresh energy, resources, and ideas. 25% of the vineyards are now being replanted, and a new winery is being built and slated to open in the late summer of 2019. Indigenous World is home to a 2.5 acre vineyard that was planted in 2014, nestled into the ravine below the wine shop, and is the only Indigenous specific winery in the Central Okanagan. The concept emerged as the owner’s way of combining the unique terroir of the valley and the Indigenous people’s stewardship of the lands. Nestled between the two houses of the Paynter brothers, Off The Grid Organic Winery is the natural evolution of the family’s 100 years and five generations of farming in West Kelowna. When you visit Off The Grid, you’ll have an experience like none other you’ve encountered; you’ll be greeted by their friendly winery goats, enjoy unobstructed views of West Kelowna and Okanagan Lake, as you sip wine in a fully sustainable, off the grid, building. Kalala Organic Estate Winery is a producer of wines made with organic grapes, located on the upper bench of West Kelowna. Kalala, meaning “Miracle Place”, is the symbol of their commitment to harmony with nature, organic viticulture practices, and their wines. Started by Karnail Singh Sidhu and family, Kalala has been making award winning, reasonably priced wines since July 2006. The vineyards were deemed certified organic in September 2010. Home to a diverse collection of wines and labels, the Hatch is based in West Kelowna and has fast become one of BC’s most popular winery and tasting emporium. Originally founded in 1884 by Latvian emigres, ‘the hatch’ was originally a root vegetable plantation. In the early 1980, the turnips were converted into Vineyards and the property as we know it know started to take shape. In 2015, the Hatch opened its doors, bringing a mandate of showcasing the unique diversity that is the Okanagan Valley through a range of delicious single vineyard wines.
